Jeep Wrangler: the electric version will arrive in 2028

While Jeep was quick to release the Wrangler 4Xe, the American manufacturer has remained very quiet about the possible arrival of a 100% electric version of its utility vehicle. Thanks to an information leak between Stellantis and the American United Auto Workers union, we now know that the Wrangler EV is expected to hit the market in 2028.

This is not the only news on the subject, as rumors also suggest a hybrid version that would use a thermal engine as a generator.

The next generation

In its statement to the American union, Stellantis indicated that the current generation of the Wrangler will be produced at the Toledo plant until 2028. It is at this time that the next generation of the Jeep Wrangler is expected to enter the market. According to current information circulating online, there is talk of a plug-in hybrid version as well as an electric version. In other words, Jeep will eliminate gasoline versions.

It is also believed that the 4Xe version could swap its current mechanics for a different powertrain where the thermal engine acts only as a generator. Thus, the Jeep Wrangler 4Xe would also be exclusively powered by electricity. In any case, we will have more information on the subject in 2025, as Jeep plans a significant update for the 4Xe version at that time. The Jeep Gladiator is also expected to benefit from a similar version at that time.

A major investment

Stellantis intends to invest $1.5 million in its Belvidere plant in Illinois for the production of a new midsize pickup. A new production line for batteries is also expected to emerge following an investment of over $3.2 billion.

Several other models in the Stellantis lineup will also be electrified by 2027. This includes the Grand Cherokee and the Durango. The RAM 1500 will be the first to benefit from an electric range extender version. Afterward, this technology is expected to make its way to other large models, such as the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer.
