RAM 1500 2024: Just one last time
December 29 2023, AutoAubaine
2024 marks the end of an era for the RAM 1500 as we know it today. Firstly, the TRX version will not return next year. It will be replaced by the RAM RHO equipped with a turbocharged inline-6 engine. The legendary 5.7-liter V8 HEMI will also be phased out from the lineup to be replaced by other versions of the Hurricane engine. In fact, only the Pentastar V6 engine will survive. To top it off, the electric version of the American manufacturer's truck is also expected to enter the market.
2024 will therefore be a year of celebration before the RAM 1500 evolves into something entirely different. You will also note that the diesel engine is already no longer part of the American truck's lineup, just like the case with the Classic version. Thus, it's a transition year, which can also represent a golden opportunity for truck enthusiasts. In fact, there are no major innovations planned, and all issues, even the smallest ones, have been resolved, indicating that the RAM 1500 is at its best in its current form. In other words, you're getting the best version of the current generation RAM.
Range and Pricing
The price for the 2024 RAM 1500 starts at $54,015, which is significantly higher than last year. The Classic version is no longer available, partly explaining this price increase. Additionally, the American manufacturer's base model offers four doors, which is not the case elsewhere. However, when compared apples to apples, you'll see that the 2024 RAM 1500 remains very competitive within its price range.
Tradesman—$54,015
Big Horn—$61,515
Sport—$71,365
Rebel—$73,415
Laramie—$78,345
Limited Longhorn—$83,315
Limited—$87,615
TRX—$122,565
Category and Competition
It's no secret that, like the F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra, the RAM 1500 is the best-selling model in its respective family. It's a competitive product that always needs to offer more since the competition is fierce in its segment. In my opinion, the RAM 1500 is the most comfortable truck on the market, and its finishing quality is by far the best. However, it remains a very personal choice. Moreover, if you don't already have a bias, I strongly advise against asking your circle for their opinions on American trucks, as it's one of those categories where people tend to prefer one model over the others. Opinions are often biased when it comes to American trucks.
Rivals: Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra, Toyota Tundra
Design and Technology
The RAM 1500 doesn't change much aesthetically for 2024, which is a good thing since the current model is already quite handsome. I particularly admire its robust design and distinctive shapes. The Rebel and TRX versions are more stylishly dressed than others. Ultimately, it depends on personal taste, as versions that offer chrome elements are also attention-grabbing. The RAM 1500 offers some of the finest wheel sets. However, there's a lack of variety in color choices, compared to bolder choices the American manufacturer has made in the past.
The interior of the 2024 RAM 1500 is superb, as it has always been. Of course, a base version remains just that, but the equipment and finishing quality improve as you move up the lineup. I'm not a huge fan of the RAM 1500's vertical screen, but I must admit that the U Connect system is incredibly efficient. The navigation is quick and seamless. It's also one of the easiest systems to use on the market. Whether it's the regular or digital version, the RAM 1500's dashboard is a success across the board.
Performance
For now, the RAM 1500 offers only three engine choices, but other options are expected to join the lineup later on. Starting with the classic 3.6-liter V6 engine with eTorque technology, this engine delivers 305 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, which is ample for most people. Next is the legendary 5.7-liter V8 HEMI engine, which produces 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. Finally, there's the Hellcat engine from the TRX version. It's a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that generates 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. This is what allows the RAM 1500 to reach 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, remarkably quick for a vehicle of this size. Regardless of the version you choose, you'll get an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Weaknesses
The TRX version's average fuel consumption is nearing the absurd. No more diesel engine options. The limited color choices are disappointing. The price quickly escalates when diving into the options list.
Strengths
It's undoubtedly the most comfortable truck on the market. The RAM is also very imposing, and its finishing quality is impressive. All the offered engines have proven themselves. The TRX version's performance is breathtaking.
Signature Element
What sets the RAM 1500 apart from the competition is its superior finishing and comfort.
Closing Thoughts
As I've mentioned before, the RAM 1500 is about to undergo changes, which might attract or alienate enthusiasts during this transformation. If you're someone who appreciates the truck in its current form, now is the time, or perhaps never, to get one.
