Dodge Charger 2024: the next generation won't be electric only

2023 is the last year of production for the Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger as we know them. It's already known that a new Charger is on the way, and it will be 100% electric. However, that's what we believed until very recently, as several sources suggest that there will be a gasoline version in the lineup.

A few days ago, spy photos of the new Dodge Charger started circulating online, and everything indicates that its engine compartment will house at least one gasoline engine.

The evidence

Although Stellantis has not confirmed the news yet, and the images only show a chassis, one of the first things noticed in the spy photos is the presence of space for a driveshaft and transmission. This is something you simply don't see in cars designed exclusively for electric powertrains.

The forum "The Drive" claims with confidence that the new Dodge Charger will be powered by the Hurricane engine. This turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine offers impressive capabilities. Some of its configurations approach 500 horsepower, and its potential is believed to be even greater. So, it's not unreasonable to think that Dodge might reserve this engine for a performance version of the Charger. Who knows, perhaps this is the future of the Hellcat versions at Dodge? Furthermore, there are rumors of the same engine being used in a future RAM TRX. It's easy to connect the dots here and assume that this is the direction the manufacturer is taking.

According to "The Drive" magazine's source, the new Charger will not only have the Hurricane engine but will also be offered in both 4-wheel drive and 2-wheel drive versions. Unfortunately, for now, there is only talk of an 8-speed automatic transmission. So, unless otherwise indicated, everything suggests that the new Dodge Charger won\'t offer a manual transmission.

Finally, nothing is set in stone at the moment, but the news is still exciting nonetheless. Interestingly, the new Dodge Charger will be assembled right here in Canada at the Stellantis factory in Windsor, Ontario.
